CONGRATS TO NOBEL PEACE PRIZE WINNERS
Science for Peace offers deeply-felt congratulations to the Japanese organization, Nihon Hidankyo, winners of the 2024 Nobel Peace Prize. This courageous movement of atomic bomb survivors from Hiroshima and Nagasaki, have, despite their physical and mental suffering, dedicated their lives to convincing nations to abandon their nuclear arms stockpiles.
According to the Norwegian Nobel Committee, the group received the prize for "its efforts to achieve a world free of nuclear weapons and for demonstrating through witness testimony that nuclear weapons never be used again…The Hibakusha (atomic bomb survivors) help us to describe the indescribable, to think the unthinkable, and to somehow grasp the incomprehensible pain and suffering caused by nuclear weapons.’’
The statement goes on to highlight the harrowing dangers of the current era: the ongoing heedless refurbishment of nuclear arsenals, the hunger among new nuclear nations to attain these weapons, and the ongoing threats of their use in current conflicts.
Science for Peace has campaigned for over four decades to rid the world of these weapons of planetary extinction, and thanks the Nobel Committee for its highlighting of this menace to humanity. Above all, we salute the valiant efforts of these survivors who were its first victims. All over the world, our grass-roots co-thinkers are bravely challenging the nuclear deterrence myth, and demanding that nations sign the Treaty for the Prohibition of Nuclear Weapons. Our movement takes heart and inspiration from everything Nihon Hidankyo has accomplished.
